Day 17: Nathan's Temptations

I have discovered, after a few days, that I am not really tempted to eat anything in the morning.  All last week, I woke up hungry, but had to make myself a “Banana Milk Shake,” to help ease the hunger pangs.  The shake doesn’t really taste very banana-y, which is fine because I don’t like bananas.  It does takes like a very synthetic vanilla drink.  I think it is because I ended up buying a bad protein powder.

Anyway, the milk shake drops into my stomach like a lead balloon, and I am not really that hungry for awhile afterwards.  I usually have to force myself to eat the egg burrito I am supposed to eat, and usually after that my appetite kicks in.  By the time I do my workout, I am usually really hungry, and then the food can’t get into me fast enough.  The worst thing is not being able to eat anything after 6:30.

Today, I started getting hungry on my way home from work.  I have never admitted this to my wife, but up until this last week, I would pretty much stop at McDonalds every day and get myself a large coke on the way home.  It was always a nice way to end the day and calm my nerves as I drove home.  I just love carbonation, which is something that I think I get from my mother.  As I drove home, I had thoughts of an ice-cold Coca-Cola, perhaps with a little something to eat.  I withstood the temptation.

Then, I met Emily so we could switch cars (Emily had a church event she had to go to tonight), and I was left with the kids.  As we started driving home, I thought about Nathan’s Dairy Bar.  If you have never been to Nathan's, consider yourself a seriously deprived human being.  The ice cream there is so good it is hard to describe.  The amazing thing is that it is soft serve ice cream, which I don’t really even like, but this stuff is so creamy it is ridiculous.  Nathan’s has a different flavor of sherbet every day.  Personal favorites are peach, raspberry lemonade, and lemon.  The girls like this stuff called “Purple Cow,” which is just a fancy name for grape, which I am not a fan of.

Anyway, as we are headed home, the big painted cow on the side of Nathan’s Dairy Bar called to me from the other side of Manassas, beckoning me to come.  It told me that one ice cream would not hurt (ice cream is banned on Kristi Approved/Live the Life).  I withstood the temptation.

It enticed me by saying that I didn’t need to get anything for myself, just for the kids. I withstood the temptation.

It reminded me that now that we are well into fall, Nathans will close soon and I will have to wait until next spring to enjoy a tasty lick of creamy, tangy, delicious soft serve ice cream.  I withstood the temptation.

It scolded me that I should come even if it is just to “buy local,” and that without my support, Nathan's might not return next year.  That did me in, and I felt obligated to go an get an ice cream sundae with brownies, fudge, whipped cream, and nuts.  Hold the cherry (why waste the extra calories).

JUST KIDDING!  I withstood that temptation as well.

Although I will be very sad if Nathan's does not come back next year, I have to ask:  Nathan's, what have you done for me?  You have taken my money, and you have enlarged my belly.  Sure, you have brought wonderful taste, but now that I think about it, that taste is almost as fleeting as, well, temptation.
