Day 86: What Is Your New Year's Resolution?

Okay, so it is January 3, 2010.  Have you broken your new year's resolution yet?  I am happy to report that three days in, I have not.  I know that you think that my new year's resolution is to lose weight.  While it is true that I want to lose more weight in 2011, that is not my resolution this year.  Actually, my new year's resolution is to learn how to play the ukulele.

I suppose I should explain.  This year I bought my wife an Ipad for Christmas.  This was about $640 over my Christmas budget for her.  When I bought the Ipad, I knew that I was going to be jealous--very jealous--and my suspicions have been true.  I can hardly stand it any time she picks that stupid thing up.  It drives me crazy.  Anyway, as I said, I knew I would be jealous, but I also knew I couldn't buy two Ipads.  So, I thought long and hard about something I have always wanted, but never gotten, that is under $50.  As if sent from heaven above, and I surfed the Internet while ruminating about this vexing issue, an ad appeared for a ukulele on sale for $35.  I remembered a childhood dream to play like the Hawaiian greats and my gift problems were solved.

Now, ever time Emily picks up that Ipad and I am tempted to either steal it away from her and play with it myself, or throw it out the window deep into the woods behind my house, I just tell her I am going to go practice the ukulele.  Given the amount of time my wife spends on that machine, I have gotten about 200 hours of practice in since Christmas.  Nevertheless, I can only play two chords and I really can't switch between the two chords well.  I tried singing "Clementine" yesterday and found I cannot sing and play a chord at the same time either.  Who knew the ukulele could be so hard?

Anyway, the resolution for this year is to practice every day, and so far, I have done it.  Why, you may ask, am I not resolving to lose weight?  Well, I think the reason is because that is what I did last year.  Plus, now that I am Living the Life, I am not on a diet, I am on a "lifestyle."  So really, with my lifestyle, weight loss is going to be natural--at least, I hope it will be!  If I haven't lost anything in a month, maybe I will give the ukulele up and go back to writing my book on the Fad Diet Diet.

I don't have any real resolutions...although I do hope to comment regularly on your blog and find subtle ways to sabotage your "lifestyle"...cause...it's just so much fun. : )

ps. i am thinking nothing is worth the cost of listening to daily ukulele practice. if emily decides to give up the ipad, let me know.
