Gym Dating

So, a week or so ago, it was time to finally start going to the gym again.  After touring a few places, my wife and I picked a place that we thought would be good.  I was excited to get back to the gym; Emily was a bit nervous because she had never really been a member of a gym before.  After one or two times, Emily has gotten the hang of it and seems to actually quite like going to the gym.  I hate it.

This gym is nothing like the old gym.  It is much smaller, much busier, has no free towel service, and, worst of all, no one that works out there is fat.  (At first I thought this last problem was because we had somehow chosen the wrong gym, then I remembered that no one in Boise is fat.)  Every time I go to the new gym, I find a way to compare it to my old gym.  The equipment isn't as nice, the treadmills don't have built-in TVs, they don't have enough free weights, the locker rooms aren't nice.  You name it, and the old gym is better.

As I thought about it, though, I remember how much of a hard time I gave the old gym, particularly on my blog.  I made fun of all sorts of things about the old gym, including the personal trainers and (of course) the posters they would hang up.  I realized that going to the gym is kind of like dating someone you really like and date a long time, but ulimately break up with.  You don't appreciate the person until you have broken up with them.  Then, all you can do is compare every other person you date to the "gold standard."

Well, XSport Fitness, I am sorry.  I am sorry that I ever treated you the way I treated you.  I promise you if you come to Boise, I will treat you better.  I will respect you and treat you the way you deserve to be treated.

You used the fat word! If this makes you feel any better, maybe some of the "healthies" (better than "not fat") were not always that way. Last week, I met a woman who struck me as the type that never had to worry a day about what she ate. She told me that last year she lost 80 pounds! Never judge a book...
