Okay, so last week I told you about what I had learned about popcorn. This week, as I was reviewing the award winning Weighty Matters blog (no, unfortunately, that is not my Weighty Matters, it is the other guy's Weighty Matters), when I was reminded of an interesting provision in the health care law that was passed last year. There is now a rule that requires all chain restaurants with at least 20 locations to post on their menu boards the calorie content of their food. Of course, restaurateurs complained bitterly about this, but in the end, it became the law.
Enter: The movie theaters. Are they restaurants? Apparently, they are not waiting to find out. They claim they clearly are not, and that there was no intent by Congress to ever have them put the calorie content of their products on their menu boards. I guess, after what I posted last week, I understand why. It is one thing to find out a Big Mac has 550 calories--you expect that. But boy, 1,300 calories for a bag of popcorn? That will certainly frighten a few people away.
