So, I read this interesting article on Well today about exercising on an empty stomach. Despite years of fitness books telling us that this is the thing to do to burn more fat, it is apparently better to eat before exercising to force your body to dip into fat reserves. If you exercise on an empty stomach, according to one survey, you end up getting about 10 percent of your energy from muscle. That, my friends, is counterproductive. Of course, if you are like me, muscle mass really isn't that important. I am probably totally "cut" underneath the layer of fat around my body, but it doesn't really matter. Instead of seeing an iron man, all you see is a doughboy. So, getting 10 percent of my energy from muscle probably doesn't matter all that much in the end, as long as the other 90 percent is coming from those fat reserves!
Honestly, though, I think that the big issue here is one that I have realized more and more over the last several months: exercise is not the key. It never has been and it never will be. It is all about the food we take in. After reading that article the other day about sugar, I seriously am thinking of making my life 100 percent sugar-free. I really think I could do it, except for one problem: ketchup.
